Karch Kiraly is probably one of the most famous players in the US.  Misty May & Kerri Walsh are quite popular now and Gabriel Reece brought a lot of attention to the sport.

Internationally, volleyball players can be as popular as most any sports figure in the US.

Today Brazil is the ruling country in FIVB men's beach volleyball, filling many of the top positions of the FIVB ranking. Top-rated players include 2004 Olympic gold medalists Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos, Marcio Araujo, and others. In the FIVB women's rankings, China and Brazil are the leading countries.

US players typically don't compete in the FIVB, but rather play in the AVP, which holds tournaments only in the US. Karch Kiraly remains perhaps the world's best-known male volleyball player, and is the only person to have won Olympic gold medals in both the indoor and beach versions of the sport. Rivalling Karch throughout the 1980s was the former all-time wins leader, Sinjin Smith. Currently, the top-ranked players on the 2007 AVP tour are Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers on the men's side, and the well-known 2004 Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh-Jennings on the women's side.

International female stars include Brazilians Ana Paula Connelly, Sandra Pires, Shelda Bede, and Adriana Behar, and Australians Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook. The young Brazilian Carolina Solberg Salgado has won a gold medal in Under-18 and Under-21 FIVB tournaments two years in a row. Overall, female beach volleyball players are generally more famous than their male counterparts and have equal or sometimes larger prize money pools.

Those that transcended the volleyball community and helped the sport's awareness are mainly Karch Kiraly and Gabrielle Reece. There are a lot of people that know the name Karch Kiraly and Gabrielle Reece is better known as a Model/Volleyball player. Gabrielle Reece was kind of like the Anna Kournakova (sp) of Volleyball and has been retired for a long time.

Wilt Chamberlin was a well-known basketball player, but he was also known as a very good pro beach volleyball player.

Mike Whitmarsh was also a pro basketball player with the Timberwolves but is more well known as a volleyball player.

Tom Selleck (Magnum P.I.) was a well known actor, but played volleyball, even posing as a national team player on posters for the 84 men's USA team.

Karch Kiraly is right now up for the Volleyball Hall of Fame and a current hot topic. Also, Misty May is the "Michael Jordan" of WOMEN'S pro beach volleyball and is still at the top of her game!
