  3. She was a nurse in world war 1, highly regarded for her work caring for the wounded. She was also addicted to opium.

    A lady called Mrs Bedford-Fenwick revolutionalised nursing by the introduction of formal training - prior to this a nurse was the next rung on the ladder after a hooker.

Florence Nightingale revolutionaised nursing practices first in the Crimea, and then in england.  Nursing had fallen into disrepute as an occupation, it was done only by men and by very low-class women, and it was not highly regarded.  Miss Nightingale trained as a nurse in Europe, where nursing was still seen as a respectable occupation, and then went out to the Crimea, where she introduced cleanliness, organisation, and decent food for the patients who were dying in great numbers.  The death rate plummted as a result of her intervention.

    After the Crimean war, she returned to England where she established a nursing school, and made nursing into a repsectable occupation for women.  She devoted the rest of her long life to improving conditions in hospitals, and to public sanitation generally.  her influence on nursing was enormous.
