I swear to God, these umpires are a waste of space with some of the decisions they make are complete and utter c**p!

Every game I constantly get angry with these umpires and how wrong they can be with the choices they make. Seriously, don't they get taught anything at umpiring school?!

  3. Who cares.instead of waisting 2 hours watching a afl match you should be working the brain by reading a book or even reading the daily paper.

you will thank me for it later in life

  4. As a former umpire, I've been heard before on this, and Deedubya makes several good and valid points.I like the one about Geeshan as Umpire's coach!!!!! OMG, give me a break. An AFL stooge.

Our culture today does not respect authority, and it spills over on to the footy field. This disrespect towards umpires by certain players will result in a half free kick becoming a free kick, if you get my drift. The umpire will penalise "the mouth" at some time or the other, and this can be a source of "inconsistency" - frees that weren't quite frees at other times.

The best game for all, players, umpires, and spectators, is when two disciplined sides go at the ball, and play to the umpire. When huge egos get in the way of the team thing, when the street culture gets in the way, the spectacle is spoilt.

  5. Dubya and Laurie both make good points.

While the skill at the top level of umpiring sometimes leaves me cold, I think the point is you can't always pick a good or bad decision from the sideline.

I once spent a year throwing things as my team (Geelong) gave away more frees than any other team.  Towards the end of the year, the coach (I think it was Ayres) came out and said something like - "put simply we're a rabble out there, of course we give frees away - we back chat, we whinge and we're always doing silly stuff - the umpires will take the easy option every time against a team like that (... and that's my challenge)

I don't know if it's right but a lot of decisions are fifty-fifty (like the guy who gets grabbed a little high but makes no effort to get rid of the ball and takes a dive instead).  If the umpire knows taking a dive is your game, or is pissed off with the last five back chats from you, then guess which way he'll lean!

  6. We have been complaining about the umps since day1, and nothing will or has ever changed, AFL is the toughest game in the world to umpire and they do make mistakes, but so do all the players skill errors, errors of judgement, coaches make bad moves, selectors pick poor sides, I bet you don't get 8 winners every week in the tipping do you, it's all part of our great game, deal with it!!!

  7. Complete c**p they are, They never make fair decisions which can easily be seen. The umpires need a smack on the backside and know how to umpire properly.

  8. Congratulations!   When I saw your question I began to laugh, not at you, just how simply you have accurately summed up umpiring, and supposedly at the highest level.    In many respects I feel sorry umpires, they only have 4 quarters each week of public exposure, and even then, they are totally despised. We don't hear of them before or after games, they have to be "seen" and not heard .  I believe the AFL has a lot to answer for, as far as 'umpiring' is concerned.   They have a former Footscray player, and Richmond coach as their BOSS, and honestly what is his 'expertise' on umpiring!     For many years the ch 9 Thursday Footy show has been a 'national ' ratings winner, but umpires are never exposed or promoted WHY NOT!

How the h**l does the AFL expect to attract young people to become umpires of the future!     In my view the AFL is totally derilect with umpiring, especially  in this part of the game, and its little wonder you have a gripe.on these rainbow warriors !

  9. Yes you are right.  It is all about power and put power in the hands of little bald men and just wait for the s....t to hit the fan plus some of them get scared of the fans when there are more fans crapping on for the favoured team than the other team.  They really should get that "holding the ball" rule right in their thick skulls and that advantage play on rule really can go bananas.  Like Michael O'Loughlin kicked a brilliant goal in the 2006 Grand Final and the Umpire had blown the whistle like bring the ball back and have a shot as the Umpire thought it wasn't an advantage but Micky O can kick those impossible goals better than when he is right in front.  Sorry I am dwelling in the past.  Sometimes I even wonder if the AFL sublimely sort of instruct the umpires to favour a certain team over another to help keep em in the finals race if they have lots and lots of supporters but I am big into conspiracy theory.

  10. I agree with you on that, and consistency is a big issue that the umpires need to improve. However, I suppose they don't make the rules, they just enforce them. I think that a lot of the umpires need to really learn to interpret the rules more fairly and consistently. I also think that players and coaches should be allowed to comment on umpiring decisions, because maybe it would help the game, and improve the umpiring.

  11. I dont go to the football anymore now 1 reason i can now watch it on my new plasma and drink when i want to 2 i agree the umpiring is a very poor effort they have to remember there is always two teams playing out there
