Question:

Who is going to be the next dominant number one in the women's game?

Since Justine retired in May, we have had three women to hold the number one ranking, (Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic) and at the beginning of the US Open 7 players had a chance to be number one when the tounament ends.

We have been so accustomed to having a consistent and dominant number one in the women's game for so long, but with the way things look now it seems like we probably may never have that dominant number one player anymore.

Who do you think is ready and capable enough to hold the number one ranking and certify herself as the next dominant player of her generation?

Serena seems like the obvious choice but if it's not her then who else? and why?

  1. SHARAPOVA y? SHES AWESOME!

  2. I don't think there will be a dominant tennis player for a while. When Henin dominated, there wasn't many people to challenge her. The Williams sisters were always injured and never playing. I think now there is just too much talent. Safina is on the rise. Serena and Venus are healthy and want to win some more grand slam titles. No matter what any one believes, Jankovic is still one of the best players on the tour. And there is always the underestimated Dementieva, and of course, Sharapova. To go along with that, you have so much young talent who are having a breakthrough year such as Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Alize Cornet, Agnes Szavay, Caroline Wozniacki and Dominika Cibulkova. I just really don't think anyone can dominant with so much talent on the tour, which is what is happening now.

  3. serena -ivanovic was a fluke just got lucky

  4. My guess would be Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, she's just starting to show her talent and there are many more years in front of her and I really think she'll be dominant force in female tennis very soon.

  5. Hard to tell right now, but it WON"T be any current Chinese player as suggested above. Wow.

I think Safina, Sharapova and the jerky Williams sisters are the most talented right now, and most capable of holding the number one spot for an extended period.

Players like Jankovic, Ivanovic and Dementieva are good and are capable of holding the number one spot, but being a DOMINANT number one as you stated is out of their realm.

  6. Well there are some good players that could stay as a # 1 but you have to pay special attention to younger players as Dinara Safina, Alize Cornet and Caroline Wozniacki because they have a long way to go since they are "starting" at the tour, but right now is hard to say because top players cant maintain their play, but I have to say that the Williams could reach the top as well Maria Sharapova.

Maria sharapova can improve her ranking in the last half of next year by recovering points of the tours that she didn't attended to this year becouse of her shoulder injury.

  7. Well, Venus and Serena Williams have been playing great the last couple years now, and actually if either of them wins this US Open, that sister will become #1 in the rankings.

But Dinara Safina is coming up and looks a strong force for #1. Ivanovic and Jankovic are still up there, but they need to win a bit more and stay solid. And keep an eye out for China's Zheng Jie and Na Li. They are having some good matches and streaks these days.

  8. Maria Sharapova.. Why? because she is very healthy, already a great tennis player, very young, fit, very tall, hard hitter, good serve..

    yea give it a year

  9. Right now is clearly a very interesting time in women's tennis. Since Justine retired in May the rankings have been changing constantly.

I honestly can't see any woman claiming the number one ranking or the title as the dominant female tennis player on a consistent basis anytime soon. Because the top players are pretty even in ability and many players are and have been injury prone, in addition to most players committing to lighter schedules, it seems like on a given tournament any player in the top 10 or top 20 can win.

The Williams sisters have a great chance to again dominate women's tennis. They have the talent, the most credentials of the current field, the experience of holding that number one spot and now it seems a renewed motivation. They both have been extremely injury prone and had somewhat inconsistent results throughout the last few years, but I think that will change. I expect both women, unless they are injured to be in the top 5 throughout next year, particularly Serena who I do believe will at some point again relish the status of top dog.

Before Sharapova had a slew of injuries she was the most consistently dominant player next to Justine. I feel like her injury problems won't go away - at least immediately and her game is too one-dimensional to perform well on every surface, however she will rise to the occasion and also maintain a top 5, top 3 ranking for a long while.

Ivanovic is a very solid player, but I can't see her as a consistent number one. She does perform well on all surfaces, but I do question her mental side a bit, even though she won the French this year. I think she will also be within the top 5 and probably top 3 for most of next year and the years to follow afterwards.

Jankovic is so consistent that she will indefinitely remain at the top of the game. She doesn't have the game to completely dominate but if any other player is off or injured she will automatically be bumped up. I expect her to be at the top, as well and perhaps the default number one.

Safina is red hot now and she has matured incredibly in the last few months. I really do see her at the top of women's tennis, but not number one, at least not for long. Top 5 and top 3 consistently. When the Williams sisters retire I could see her being the dominant number 1, alongside perhaps Sharapova.

Dementieva I think will get to a career high of three or two at some point soon, but not number one.

I think Serena and Venus will be the closest players to "dominating" women's tennis. I think Safina has great potential as well and Sharapova if she gets healthy again. However, I expect to see a lot of flip flopping in the next year to come.

  10. I would say Safina. She is doing great. She has won several tournaments this year. She also won the US open series in the ATP masters series.  Dementieva is a second choice.  Sharapova may never be as good as she was given her shoulder.

  11. i quite like dinara safina

  12. good question. the problem is, i don't see one.

Safina is on a huge breakthrough, but i don't think she has the big weapon to dominate, she may very possible climb to #1 for a short while, but not dominate.

i don't see one single player on the WTA side like Graf, Seles, Hingis, old Williams or Henin's kind of caliber right now.

if Serena can put her mind together and really really wanting it and willing to put in the mind and work, she's the closest one right now.
