The job of "officially" assigning goals and assists to every goal in the NHL seems like it would be a fun, but also easy job. With all the cameras out there, it is hard to miss assists. Yet the NHL continues to miss assists. I know if you ask a player, they will tell you they don't care, but for the integrity of the game they owe the players every assist they earn.

Case in point. Dan Cleary's goal in Game 1. Kris Draper won a faceoff cleanly back to Brad Stuart. Stuart cleared the puck down the ice, then Cleary proceeds to backhand the puck past the goalie. Official scoring: Daniel Cleary 2 (sh) (Brad Stuart). Is it really that hard to do this job? Without that crucial faceoff win, there is NO GOAL. Yet Draper gets screwed out of an assist. And guys like him should be rewarded on the stat sheet for plays like that. Am I just being anal, or have you had similar thoughts with your team's players. Or doesn't it matter to you. My point is we have the technology, so get it right.

  1. I hear ya but how many times do you see a player get an assist when he didn't deserve it?Turco leaves it for Modano who springs Richards on a breakaway goal.Goal Richards Assists-Turco and Modano,so it works both ways.

But your example with the faceoff that it wouldn't have been a goal if he didn't win the faceoff?Well if the other forwards don't tie up their men they might not have scored as well so double edged sword there.

To answer your question I'm not 100% sure who makes the call but I always thought the ref came to the scorers table and made the call he saw then if it needed to be changed it was by eyes in the sky.

  2. There is an official scorer at each game. There is also certain rules for what counts as an assist and what doesn't. I don't know the rules and I don't make them, but my guess is that winning a faceoff doesn't count.

  3. Well, once someone touches the puck, they affect the rest of the game (butterfly effect) - so how far back to you go for assists?

I think the basis for awarding assists is pretty fine-tuned and consistent after all these years.

  4. The guys in Toronto.

If you check the 4 second mark, you will see the puck was dumped in by the Pittsburgh player, hence the reason there was no assist.

Teams are given the chance to contest goals and assists at the end of each period, Detroit did not contest the goal, and the official scoresheet shows a Pittsburgh dump in.

  6. The official scorer is in charge.
