  1. I like the three tier approach that gives children the possibility of being the oldest and most responsible in each of 3 schools during their education. I went through this system as did my children, all in Leicestershire where the system is alive and well - who wants to put little 11 year olds in the same school as 18 year old hulks?

I don't agree with segregation by s*x for entire schools, but I do think all would benefit from mixed schools with single s*x teaching which would allow boys to flourish in arts subjects and girls in sciences and maths.

  2. I don't see that a single s*x approach would be necessary if proper discipline was going to be maintained.

In schools with "proper" discipline, then competition between sexes is a healthy motivating factor.

The three tier system sounds good though, and I definitely agree that some harsher discipline should be brought back - all the power now has been taken away from the teachers.

If they brought the belt back now, it would be drowned in so much paperwork that teachers would only use it in the most deserving cases, and it would be monitored to prevent abuse.

Some of the really bad little monsters in schools these days are total cowards, and one good whack early on would ensure good behaviour till their dying day.

    EDIT:

Actually Cc, I know this is going to get me a lot of thumbs down, but I would certainly approve of having (mentally) disabled children taken out of mainstream schools where they are not able to maintain a reasonable standard of behaviour.

In my school there was a boy with learning difficulties who used to fill up ribena cartons with his own urine and spray them over people in the corridors. The teachers maintained they couldn't do anything about this and that it was unreasonable of us to be upset.

Another boy used to eat anything he saw, and would regularly steal other peoples lunches. Same story - no apology from the teachers, they didn't even offer to refund you for the lunch. They wouldn't install lockers or security cameras either. Even worse than this, because he was in a mainstream school he didn't have half the supervision he needed, and it was up to the other children to stop him eating sweets and chewing gum from the floors.

There were also a large number of children with lesser problems, who while not being actually offensive, spent a lot of class time running around shouting or throwing things at the teacher. I feel this is entirely detrimental to the learning process for the rest of the class and I don't feel it's appropriate. Why should the futures of a whole class of students be damaged by the behaviour of others? It's no use saying they will have to live with these people, because they will never have to work with them. That kind of behaviour is not acceptable in a real world work environment, and should not be acceptable in a mainstream school.

I heard that the boy who used to have the trick with the urine cartons was recently charged with the rape of an eight year old girl, but I expect it won't be long before he is back in the mainstream of society again.

  3. I am and the sooner the better, especially the discipline bit, it's about time the British People told the European Parliament and all the misguided "Do Gooders" to keep their noses out of our affairs & let us get on with the job of making Britain GREAT like it used to be.

  4. Um ... no.

  5. While we are at, lets get rid of mainstreaming disabled kids and go back to the apartheid schooling of old and bring  back the cane. How far backward do you want to go?  Workhouses for the poor too?

No system is absolutely perfect, but going back to the dark ages certainly isn't  the answer.  Single gender schools are just hotbeds of old school networks and misogyny.   If students are expected to live and work in today's society then they need to learn from an early age how to adapt to the conditions  they will find there.   Co-ed is definitely the way to go.

  6. I am. The boys from my local school know more about anatomy than maths and English language. When they are walking home from school where they have their hands on each other is no body's business.
