If you want research papers always have a look first on Google Scholar. Even if it is not what you are looking for exactly the have a look at their bibliography and trace the sources back from there. It is worth enrolling on a part time course at your local  uni just so you have cheap access to their online journals etc. Much, much cheaper than subscriptions to all the journals you want.

I highly recommend starting with a website called www.usgbc.org - it is the United States Green Building Council and they have a lot of links to information about all sorts of sustainable design information.
