He is a 23 yr old swimmer who swims for Club Wolverine, grew up in Baltimore as as agegroup swimmer swam for NBAC-North Baltimore aquatic club, he graduated from college Michigan I believe.  He is a big deal because he is competing in his 3rd Olympics.  He is a well rounded swimmer who has world records in many events and distances.  He has a decent shot of winning more medals in this Olympics than any other swimmer has done before.  The record is 7 medals won by Mark Spitz in 1972.  Many consider Michael Phelps the best swimmer that there ever has been.

Only the most amazing swimmer ever born. He won six gold medals at Athens in 200 and also competed in Sydney in 2000 at only 15 years old. His coach is Bob Bowman, who coaches Michael at Club Wolverine along with other swimmers like Peter Vanderkaay. Michael and Bob will be transferring back to North Baltimore Aquatic Club (where Michael trained originally). Michael scored a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in 6 individual events, and is basically a shoo-in for some relays. Anyway, that's all I got right now. :)
