Who is more important on board a vessel - the captain or the chief engineer?

They are both required to operate the vessel - but who more so than the other?

  1. Always the Skipper, or Captain. He is ultimately responsible for the fate of the ship, good or bad. the Chief Engineer is important, very important, but he does not override a Captain's order.


  2. Chief engineer would be pretty useless on my boat; I guess he could row if the wind dies.

  4. The Captain, he has the ultimate responsibility for everything that occurs on board his vessel. Although the Chief Engineer is very important also.

  5. The Captain is the overall boss of the vessel, but if it wasn't for the Engineer you wouldn't get very far. But everything that is done on the boat or problems that are happening, I have to run it by the Captain before I do anything just to let him know what is happening down below in the engine room

  7. the cap'n is solely responsible for the overall operation of the vessell.  his word is law.  nuff said
