Question:

Who is more underrated than Dan Severn?

First, his long wrestling career: Severn has held many national and international titles; he was often introduced to the UFC Octagon as holding more than 100 in total. Severn also held the US national record for victories by pin from 1976 to 1992.

Now his MMA career: A staggering 108 fights...with 86 wins, 15 losses, and 7 draws. That's unbelievable! While other MMA guys are retiring around 40, he's 50 and still winning!

The reason we don't hear about Dan is that he isn't invited to the big shows much. Why? Because his style isn't good for business. He often bullies his opponent for the entire match...winning by decision. He's won 20 matches by decision.

Still, if we are looking to the MMA for styles/strategies/etc that are effective, there is a lot to learn from Dan. Not only has he won the vast majority of his fights, he keeps on going and going and going.

Anyway, I'm not in luv with Dan, or claim he's the best or anything. I know he hasn't been in the big shows lately, so it's hard to gauge his true ability. Still, you have to admit he has a successful record and style...underrated.

So, who else is underrated...and why?

  1. I didn't know Severn was still doing his thing....Good for him. I don't think he's underrated. he's just not in the spotlight. You can't promote around an old guy. Couture was the exception to that rule. But even his star is fading. In the fight game, its out of sight, out of mind. But people who are fans of old school, style vs. style cage fighting will always have a place in their hearts for "The Beast".

  2. Jeremy Horn

His record is 88-17-5 although he has lost his last two in a row but he's still fighting in the UFC.

  3. the only fighter i can think of would be frank shamrock, but thats mainly due to the falling out with dana wight.  hes still popular in the mma world but i don't think he gets the credit for his achievements

  4. I agree Severn doesn't get anywhere near the credit he should and it's a sin. I think he should coach one of the teams on Ultimate Fighter. Sure he isn't some motormouth who keeps needing to remind everyone including himself what a bad *** he is or some wanna be Abercrombie model. That's what makes him great. We need more fighters and less showboaters.

  5. Gene Lebell.  He wears a pink gi and beats up youngsters despite the fact that he's over 70!

Ted Wong - student of Bruce Lee and cancer survivor who can move quicker and more deftly than most people in their 20's.

Forrest Griffin - yaya he's a UFC champ, but nobody gives the guy credit because he has big ears and is actually humble.  He is the only guy EVER to choke out Shogun.  He beat Rampage decisively.  He fought the fight that made UFC / MMA what it is today (that's from a commercial standpoint, not martial arts standpoint).  He wins his fight despite the fact that he's ALWAYS rated as the underdog.  I'm not a huge fan of Forrest, but I think he deserves more cred than he gets.

Eddie Bravo - inventor of the Rubber Guard and "no-gi" grappling expert.  He changed th game altogether and is still evolving - plus he submitted Royler Gracie which wasn't supposed to be possible.

  6. my coach just fought severn and lost due to keylock right after he dropped him with one punch. however to answer your question about Severn. my coach felt really honered to fight him and talked to him afterwards and got some pics. in their talks severn doesn't feel the need to fight the big promo's anymore. he is just fighting to compete and have fun. now on the other hand when it comes to ranking I feel the rankings have come to the attention that Pride was not were ALL  the talent was at and are now rateing fairly, especially with the Syvia and Fedor fight. In my oppinion to call a fighter over or under ranked is an insult to the commissions, regulator and experts that actually rank the fighters. If you ask who is over valued, over loved or over viewed or under. I can give you many answers but I think the ranking system is solid and will be for another year or two, maybe three.

  7. Dan severn is the first guy in the ufc hall of fame ofcoarse he isnt underated he will be a part of MMA history forever

  8. I thought Severn was retired......Well you could say Kimbo Slice because he seems to catch a lot of bad hype but he's only been in 2 or 3 fights. I would like to say Mark Kerr but we all know how he's performing lately.....so let's go with DON FRYE

  9. Don Frye

  10. I think Jon Fitch is underrated. He is an awesome fighter and has never really gotten any recognition, until now. I don't know how he will hold up against GSP, but I think he should be fighting alot more than he has gotten to.
