I am going to start working in a new building that is currently still under construction. My start date has been pushed back due to completion being pushed back. I am really concerned about the safety of a building that is brand new, a multi-million dollar facility, and possibly being rushed to completion. For a facility so expensive, are more stringent codes enforced due to insurance costs? I know there is a service elevator, therefore will there be stairs? In a high tech, costly building, will the alarms and fire systems be high tech as well? I know this is a very broad question in some respects, but I am really nervous about a building that could possibly be rushed to completion (faulty wiring, etc). Who inspects what, and to what degree? I live in MA, the building will hold about 1000 people, and yes, this is keeping me from sleeping tonight, I am so concerned.

Thank you in advance to anyone who has the expertise to answer this question, or direct me to a source that could help

  1. I think the city has safety inspectors that come out and inspect everything from wiring to foundations and also the fire dept. has inspectors to modes.

  2. The city has building codes that specify all the safety aspects of the building and inspectors to enforce them.  Fire exits, wiring gauge, all that stuff.  Generally works well.  The only hazard is that sometimes the inspectors do not do a thorough job because they are rushed.  Or paid off (NYC has had a lot of that recently).  So, the system is good if it works right.  Get a good night's sleep.  Others have done the worrying for you.
