We are just days away from the first major golf tournament of the year…………”The Masters” at Augusta National. Can you tell me who is responsible for this course and this tournament?

Hint: He never turned professional. He came up with the idea of putting numbers on the bottoms of the clubs.

  1. bobby jones , cliff roberts , 1934 started . grounds crew and members along with pinkerton security , staff the course . the food is done for the course outside catering company , dinning room food , regular kitchen staff . no volunteers , with the exception of score carriers from local golf clubs usually juniors

  2. Bobby Jones started it.  It was not called the Master originally, he just invited his friends and most of the top players.  He was a little embarrased that they started calling it the Masters Tournament.  It is still invitation only.  There are ways to qualify to get invited, but they still need to invite you and don't have to invite anyone they don't want (ie Colin Montgomery this year).  Trevino had some beefs with them about who got invited and who didn't.

  3. Bobby JOnes...

  4. I am not certain about the numbers bit, but Bobby Jones created Augusta National as his idea of the perfect golf course. It was designed in part by Alistair MacKenzie, who also created Cypress Point and other legendary courses. With all of the changes, however, its hard to see either Jones' or MacKenzie's original design in the current course.

Jones was encouraged to build August by Clifford Roberts, a New York financier. It's also Roberts who encouraged the annual tournament, which Jones wanted to call the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. It was Roberts who insisted on "The Masters," a title which Jones thought too ostentatious.

  5. The gentleman above is 100% correct.  I am an  augustan and and know alot of history on the course.  Bobby Jones fits every catagroy you mentioned above.  What is not widely known is that there was aman named Clifford Roberts ( a real estate magnate)  who along with Jones envisioned the Augusta National and the Masters.  Roberts is mostly responsible for course and tournament, however he was a somewhat rude and bull-headed businessman.  Roberts knew that he would need a public face that people liked to make this dream of the Augusta National and the Masters a reality.  He pitched the idea to Jones who got on board immediately.  It is often said that Jones was the public face for Augusta National, however he was only a puppet tied to the strings of Mr. Clifford Roberts, who had the greatest vision of the course and sold this to his public speaking, "Golden-Boy,"  Mr. Jones.    Another bit of trivia:  In his 70's Clifford Roberts became reclusive and resided mostly at the Augusta national in a cabin.  Mr. Roberts took his own life by using shooting himself with a .38 caliber pistol on an evening on the par-three course in the Augusta National Golf Club in his 70's.

  6. Bobby Jones. Is this a trivia question or you really don't know?

He is one of the greatest players to every play the game. He was a lawyer by trade and he is responsible for Augusta. Back in his day the amateur players were actually better than the pros. The amateurs had professional jobs, like Bobby's and only played in the summer time.

Take a look at the link below for more history of the Masters.

The pros were looked at as second class citizens that did nothing but play the game because they couldn't do anything else productive. That, of course has changed dramatically since Bobby's days. People like Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Arnold Palmer made the fans come out.
