When the UFC first started Royce won UFC 1 and 2 when they were open weight tournaments with almost no rules.

He also won UFC 4 and is in the UFC hall of fame. Alot of

people believe at the time the UFC was just an infomercial

for his BJJ or Gracie Jiu Jitsu, at the time he just wanted to

prove how dominating his style was and he was right. Rorian

Gracie and Art Davie created the UFC and Rorian chose

Royce to represent his familys style.

Royce Gracie is the grappler who forever changed the way people throughout the world looked at one fighting style versus another. He was the 6'1", 175 lb fighter who beat all of his larger, stronger opponents in the first four UFCs. He showed us all the importance of knowing how to fight on the ground. Royce's technique was first seen on the big screen in the movie 'Lethal Weapon' in the ending fight scene with between Mel Gibson and Gary Busey. These two actors were trained by Rorion and Royce Gracie, and little did I know that the actors in the film were performing Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The ground fighting was said to be 'special forces' hand-to-hand combat almost 2 decades before the U.S. military embraced Gracie Jiu Jitsu. So 'Lethal Weapon' was a preview of what was yet to come.

Royce Gracie, pronounced Hoyce Gracie (born December 12, 1966) is a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Gracie became well-known in the mid 1990s with a string of submission victories over larger opponents in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Between 1993 and 1994, he won 11 matches by submission and was the tournament winner of UFC 1, UFC 2, UFC 4, and fought to a draw with Ken Shamrock in the superfight at UFC 5. These results contributed to the movement towards grappling, cross-training and MMA.
