Girls generally start faster because they go through puberty earlier than boys.  So they're brains develope faster.  Therefore in earlier stages of life, usually 3rd - 7th grade, girls are generally smarter.  Then boy's usually catchup after that.

That is like asking how long is a piece of string. One child could be smarter than the next regardless of their s*x.

On average girls mature quicker so their brain function may appear to make them smarter at the same age as a boy...

Genetically speaking there is no difference, however, most of the really smart people happen to be male.  Einstein, Galileo, Newton, etc...

Whoever studies more is smarter.  There have been debates on this topic going on for generations... as in who has the larger brain, who uses it to capacity, who is more imaginitive, etc. and it seems that there IS a difference between the sexes.  Not necessarily that one is smarter than the other, but that they use their brain funcitions differently.
