Who is that little leprechaun/German guy on the Vernors cans?

I was drinking a Vernors and noticed a little guy with red hair and a hat on the can. Who is that guy?

It is a stylized image as the original Vernor's syrups were aged in wooden barrels like beer, and the label still say it is good because of the wood, I have been drinking it since I was a lad here in Canada since the 1960's, my father absolutley loved it, a local soft drink distributor used to bring in draft syrup and we would go down and almost make ourselfs sick on it, I am a diabetic now and the sugar free while good is not the same as the regular, I remember it in glass bottles, in fact I have 3 from the 1960's in my beer bottle collection.
