I've got a tank with:

-a calico fantail... goldfish thing

-a buenos aires tetra

-a black skirted tetra

-a silver molly

and i woke up this morning and there is 4 baby fish swimming around! I know you are supposed to take out the mother, but i don't know which one that is!

Any idea who the likely one is?

  1. As the others said, the reason for removing the "Mom" is to keep her from eating the babies, but the others would eat them too.  They are too tiny to catch in a net.  Try using a large-diameter suction hose, at least 1/2", and siphon the babies out.  Raise them in a separate tank.

Or, you could give the babies lots of hiding places (bushy plants etc) and hope they make it.  That's probably your best option. The survivors will learn how to get along with (or avoid) their tank-mates.

Crush the flake food into powder when you feed your fish.  The fry will eat flakes too, but can't swallow big pieces, and are not strong enough to rip off chunks yet. Feed the big fish first, at the end of the tank away from the fry, then feed the fry while they're distracted.

The Mom is most likely the Molly, how long have you had her? Gestation is about a month, she could have been pregnant when you got her, and she could have another batch of babies from that breeding.

  2. PROBOBLY THE MOLLIE

  3. 1)do u know if the tetras or silver molly is female

2)it was probably the neons that mated together

3)look for a squared out tummy on yr fishes with a white tube near the back dorsal fin if u find 1 or 2 thats the ones that have given birth

4)unless the silver molly was pregnant b4 u got it then it could be that 1

    good luck

  4. My guess is the Molly, she is a live bearer. Your other fish will eat the young if they get the chance to, so if you can take the babies out and put them into a tank. Leave the other fihs right where they are. Good luck.

  5. Go to any pet shop. They will know the difference. Thats what i did to mine.

  6. u don't really have to take out only ' mother ' but all the fishes in there! and it probably is molly cuz mollies don't lay eggs. they lay frys...

  7. Mollies are livebearers so 99.9% chance it is the mollie.

You have a bad fish mix in your tank.  A goldfish is a coldwater fish and does not belong with tropicals.  It also needs at least a 20 gallon tank and will foul the water for your other fish very quickly.

Taking out the mother is only to keep her from eating the fry but any of your other fish will eat them too.  If you want to try to save them you need to take out the fry, not the mother.
