Severus Snape is the Half-blood Prince.He is a half-blood because his mother was a pure-blood witch but his father was a muggle.  His mother's maiden name was Prince.  Poor Snape no doubt developed the title to give himself an aura of glamour and power, qualities which his unhappy childhood did not offer him.

Severus Snape. His father Tobias Snape was an abusive muggle. His mother was a witch and she went to hogwarts. Her maiden name was Prince before she married Tobias. Hence the nickname, "Half-blood Prince." Snape got her old potions book when he went to Hogwarts, that's why it's so old when Harry gets it.

I was really surprised when I read that. I thought it would have been like Albus Dumbledore or something.
