Jonty Rhodes would probably the best. Very quick and agile as well as athletic and a safe pair of hands. However its hard to compare the modern day fielders to the past fielders. Today, the fields as much safer to play on, sliding is easier. However Jonty still comes first but you can't forget about Neil Harvey, played 50 years ago and is still considered a great fielder.

Fielding statistics describe only catches taken and stumpings affected. They don't tell how many catches are dropped, how many times player ran and stopped a ball going to boundary, etc. In the absence of this data, we have to go by catches per match. But then, if a team has strong bowlers like Warne, McGrath, etc. the catches per match are bound to be very high for keepers like Adam Gilchrist who is considered the best. When the bowling strength is not very effective or that great, you may have to look at the catches per match figure to judge relatively the greatness of a fielder (wicket keeper).

I feel that Franz Alexander (WI), GRA Langey (Australia), Salim Yousuf (Pakistan) and Adam Gilchrist (Australia) are the best four fielders.

But if you remove wicket keepers from the list, world's best fielder has got to be Eknath Solkar of India who took 53 catches in 27 test matches. Graham Roope, Bobby Simpson and Wally Hammond are also high on the list.

Jonty Rhodes is the best fielder of all time and will forever be.

He was the most reactive fielder ever and the best point fielder ever.He was the backbone of the South African team in the 90's.He had cat-like speed and he never took his eyes of the ball.He had firm fingers which always held onto a catch even if it was hit like a rocket.He had a great throw and a strong arm which would shatter the stumps from anywhere in the pitch.

His run-out of Inzamam in the 1992 World cup or what I like to call the "Jonty Torpedo" is one of the greatest moments in the game.

The all time best fielder is without doubt Jonty Rhodes.
