If you know where the photo was taken (a particular museum??) then it might be more helpful.  For one thing, the museum might have an online database.  For another, you could call the museum and ask them about it.  

Well I tried to do some extensive research for it online, but it seems I can only find similar clown-related paintings.  The painting probably isn't famous, which is why you got it for $5 at a garage sale, lol.  I really like it though.

Maybe your painter was trying to paint a "reply" to another famous clown painting.
