I really like Robert Service, Geoffrey Hosking, Alison Weir and Simon Schama.

Depends on the period you're studying... personally I love Charles Zika, he specialises in Early Modern Europe, and witch-hunting. Otherwise, Richard Evans (WW2) or Simon Schama (British history)

I don't really know if you would call him a "historian", but James Burke sees history and "Connections" (pardon the pun) like few others have explained it.

I must agree with Bigredan and go with Simon Schaama. Remarkable. It really depends on the subject matter.
