He may not be the hottest driver right now but it's hard to argue against Jimmie Johnson and his winning percentage of 14.75 to go with back to back championships.  He has never finished worse than 5th in the final standings and could be only the 2nd driver to win 3 championships in a row.  After Jimmie I would say Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart.  Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards seem to be more comfortable with the poorer handling COT but the 48 team is making gains on them all the time and will be a major player in the chase.  Here's a stats link comparing Jimmie, Jeff and Tony over the last 5 years.http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/head...

edit:  I just realized that Jimmie almost has as many wins as Jeff and Tony combined, over the last 5 years.  Wow, that in itself is amazing!

That's a tough one. Jeff Gordon is really good but is having probably the worst season of his life now. Jimmie Johnson is also good but not great. Kyle Busch has little talent. He wins because of Toyota and Gibbs. He wasn't that good in the #5 so why is he so better now... Toyota and Gibbs. Tony Stewart is pretty good but also having a terrible season.
