Ray Robinson is clearly the best fighter to ever put on gloves. Saying Marciano was better than Ali is sorta sad, but hey. . . this is a forum for opinions.

I answered this question about 3 times in the last week I believe but nonetheless, it's still a good question.  There are a lot of weight classes and a lot of great fighters in the history of boxing.  The following fighter is my choice:

Sugar Ray Robinson

undefeated as world welterweight champion

5 time world middleweight champion

97-1-2 record in his first 100 fights.

Was 132-3-2 after losing to Joey Maxim for his try at the light heavyweight title in 1952.  Retired until coming back in 55.

Great boxer and fighter.  Great footwork in the ring with great speed and power in either hand.  Beat such fighters as Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basillio, Jake LaMotta, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Rocky Graziano,Fritzie Zivic, Bobo Olson, and Randy Turpin all former world champions in his career!

Ko'ed:  1 time due to heat exhaustion to Maxim in 200 career fights!
