  6. Everyone has said Don Bradman and I am a huge supporter of his as I am Australian and he was a brilliant cricketer.

But, in my opinion, to become the greatest ever cricketer, you need to have dominated every aspect of the sport: Sir Garfield Sobers was the West Indies greatest allrounder and possibly THE greatest allrounder of all time. Sobers was a left-handed player with a batting average of 57.78 in tests and a bowling average of 34.03 in tests. These are magnificent numbers for an allrounder and he also took 109 catches in 93 tests so he was an exceptional fielder. What's more, his high score in tests was 365* which is higher than Bradman's. Sir Garfield Sobers was a magnificent cricketer who surely is one of the greatest.

  7. I am with Colin on this one. Gary Sobers was an attacking batsman, yet had the technique and temperament to play long innings, e.g. his 365*. In all, he scored 8032 runs in 93 matches, took 235 wickets bowling literally everything (left arm fast medium, swing, slow left arm, left arm orthodox and chinaman). His large hands gobbled 109 catches, many at slip and quite a few at silly point/silly mid-on. Plus he was an adventurous captain who often made bold decisions on declarations, that increased the possibility of a result in a game in which he captained the Windies. Lastly, he was a larger than life figure, one with an assured confidence to himself and the way he played cricket.

By contrast, Don Bradman hardly ever bowled and was never mentioned as a brilliant fielder. He led an Australian team that was much stronger than the Windies teams led by Sobers (WI in the 60's were not quite the all-conquering force they were in the 1970's and 80's.) Look up the stats and read the biographies. SOBERS IS THE GREATEST EVER.

  8. the don

    sir donald bradman

averaged 99.94 in 80 innings. In his last ever game he needed just 4 runs to average 100, but was out for a duck.

Statitians say that the don is the greatest sportsman of all time.

Its also said that when nelson mandela was released from prison he asked an australian visitor 'is sir donald bradman still alive?'

  9. The answer is Bradman first, a long streak of daylight second.

I understand the arguments being put forth for Sobers and they are valid due to Sobers' great abilites as a batsman and bowler but Sobers did not have the same impact on the game that Bradman did. No one ever had or has since until possibly Warne.

One of the previous respondents mentiont he statistical factor and it's true that a number of years ago a bunch of mathematical eggheads put together some kind of statistical methods of comparing the career stats of the greatest players in a wide range of sports and the result showed Bradman so far ahead of the then second most successful sportsman of history in Michael Jordan, that Bradman's percentage was nearly double.

There have been many brilliant cricketers over the years who would line up around Bradman in a team of all-time greats but Bradman would be the first one picked.
