None of them pompey's Diarra, he's the young makelele, he carries the pompey team and makes it tick. liverpool fans must see something in macherano that no one else does he obviously wasnt good enough for west ham.

Definitely Viera, but currently it has to be Marcos Senna of Villareal, He was a one man wrecking machine for Spain at the Euro's. My MVP for that tournament

I hate to admit it as I am a Manchester United fan but out of the 11 that you have named... Patrick Viera is the best defensive midfield player. He was one of the best midfield players in the premier league when he was at Arsenal and that is high praise as he was up against top midfield players like Roy Keane and Emmanuel Petit. He is the most proven player out of your selection other than Makelele and Silva but he still has to edge it.

I'd have said Vieira a few years back, but hes getting on and I think De Rossi at Roma and for Italy is a top player. Hargreaves is a complete workhorse, and Javier Mascherano has a touch of class about his game.

Zambrotta hasn't been the same these past couple years and is more of a full-back, while Yaya Toure shared a poor season with him at Barca last year- although Toure is definitely one for many years to come.

Guti is a better attacking midfielder IMO, Sissoko has a lot to prove, Makelele is ageing fast, and Renato also had a relatively bad season last year- especially with the loss of his Sevilla team-mate Antonio Puerta

Guti Haz of Real Madrid is an attacking midfielder..De Rossi is the most complete central midfielder; he can attack and defend. Owen Hargreaves has good stamina and runs a lot;But I think the best is Makelele,the initator of the 'makelele-holding' role.
