That's a pretty open question.  Back in the day, players often stuck to one particular game or a few that they specialized in.  Today's players do everything.  For straight pool, I give the edge to Willie Mosconi even though Ralph Greenleaf won more world championships.  For bank pool, I give it to Eddie Taylor.  9-ball, I'm giving the edge to Efren Reyes, even though I thought Wimpy Lassiter was also a great 9-baller.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

i have a problem with saying efren is the greatest nine ball player because his break has always held him back. He is the best all around player for sure. Nine ball is a toss up. Bank to Taylor. Straight pool to Mosconi

Willy Mosconi was considered by most the best ever. Fats was a much better showman than player, and got spanked by Mosconi when they played. Efren Reyes is probably the best modern player.
