  1. The question is flawed in its assumption--the vast majority of a first baseman's value is in his hitting.  That's why it's the position they can shift old players to.  I can't think of any first basemen who shifted to other positions, but they shift short stops to 1st (Ernie Banks), 3rd basemen (George Brett), left fielders (Stan Musial), and so on.

So the best first baseman is still Lou Gehrig.  The best current player at the position if Pujols.

  2. DERREK LEE

  3. Herbert Perry, Perfect Fielding Percentage in 114 games

  4. If hitting is out of it, then I got to go with Keith Hernandez as well

  5. Gil Hodges, he was a three time gold glove award winner.

Keith Hernandez had more gold gloves but Hodges won the first three ever and didn't have the opportunity to win one every single year he played.

He also was a 3 time World Series champion

    An 8 time All-Star

and A winner of the prestigious Lou Gehrig Memorial Award which commemorates having the right attitude about the game and integrity.

  6. J.T. Snow is up there 6 gold gloves career .995 fielding pct.

  7. I would go with Keith Hernandez. Though Wes Parker was supposed to be pretty good too.

  8. Keith Hernandez.

  9. Donnie Baseball.

  10. Keith Hernandez.

He's the Ozzie Smith of first base.

Most of the time, if you're good on defense, you're not going to play 1B.

  11. How come nobody mentioned Dave Kingman?

  12. Kieth Hernandez? How about LOU GEHRIG!!! or defensively, maybe todd helton or kevin youkilis

  13. I used to think it was my imagination, how good Hernadez was, but then i saw some clips of his play to remind me. n He's the one!!

  14. last year was the 50th anniversary of the rawlings gold glove award and the gave a special award to the best player at each position.  the winner for every position was a hall of famer except 1st base. the winner was wes parker. wes played for the dodgers for 8 years and 6 of those years he won a gold glove. wes was before my time but anyone that saw all other gold glove winners have told me that hernandez was good, mattingly was great but nobody will ever be as good as parker.

  15. Don Mattingly. He once when 162 games straight without making an error.

But really, asking who the best defensive first baseman of all time is like asking who is the fastest slow guy.
