At the moment I would say Matthew Hayden. He can build a platform for the other lower order batters like no-one else can, he's long been a consistent run scorer for Australia and has been one of the best openers for nearly a decade.

JB Hobbs (1908-30) is the all time best opener in test match cricket. In 61 matches, he scored 5,410 runs at an average of 89 runs per match and 57 runs per innings in those days when bowlers took wickets every 16 - 20 runs.

Herbert Sutcliffe (1924-35) who began opening for England with JB Hobbs is undoubtedly the second best test match opener who in 54 matches scored 4,555 runs.

Ken Barrington (1955-68) is the third best opener. 82 matches. 6,806 runs.

Sunil Gavaskar (1971-87) is the fourth best. He scored in 125 test matches, 10,122 runs.
