  1. At the moment I would say Matthew Hayden. He can build a platform for the other lower order batters like no-one else can, he's long been a consistent run scorer for Australia and has been one of the best openers for nearly a decade.

    Herbert Sutcliffe (1924-35) who began opening for England with JB Hobbs is undoubtedly the second best test match opener who in 54 matches scored 4,555 runs.

    Ken Barrington (1955-68) is the third best opener. 82 matches. 6,806 runs.

    Sunil Gavaskar (1971-87) is the fourth best. He scored in 125 test matches, 10,122 runs.
