Depends, theres too many kinds of poker u should be more specific. At texas hold em i would say phil helmuth has proved himself with 11 titles, as hard as it is to say that such a whiner who doesnt deserve such a title in any way. In cash games they say chip reese is one of the best, i dont know about small tournaments. but phil ivey is an outstanding huge tournament player, and he doesn't whine 1/1000 of the time that phil helmuth does, even if he has suffered a worst bad beat. It comes down to the fact that noone will ever agree on the best poker player like people agree on Tiger Woods being the best golfer becasue you can always just say "he got lucky". As far as im concerned the player that won the tournament is the best, whether he got outplayed or not, if you don't think so you probably shouldn't play poker or you'll end up being the next biggest ***** since phil helmuth.

Rankings are meaningless. When you get to the top 10 players, the difference in skill is minimal at best. During any given game, any of the top 10 players can beat any of the other top ten players, so just saying one is #2 and one is #1 does not reflect the reality.

If you ask many people these days, they will say Phil Ivey.  He's a very dangerous player.

But truth is there are many really good players.  Some are better at some types of poker than others.  Some are better at cash games, others better at tournaments.

I don't think there is one definitive best answer.  Theres probably 20-50 world class elite players in the world who really play very well indeed.
