Without a doubt it was and is George Washington. He set the precedent. He was a true public servant. He actually adhered to his oath of office. He could have been king and chose not to. He personally fought in the war for independence and it is directly due to his actions that we even exist as a country. Most Americans at the time thought the war was a lost cause. Even the ones that supported it. He refused to give up and ultimately won. Read the history books. If you think it was Abraham Lincoln you're way off. If you think that the war between the states was about slavery you're even farther off. The war between the states was about states rights and the states lost. The federal government won that war and we've been a tyranny ever since. we've been under martial law ever since. The south is still an occupied nation. I know you think I'm crazy but you don't know your history. Ask yourself why Jefferson Davis was never tried for treason. Show me in the constitution where the states didn't have the right to secede. Why were the different units referred to by the states they were from? After the war they were just federal troops. Why did the emancipation proclamation only apply to the states under southern control at the time it was issued? Abe Lincoln shredded the constitution and we're still paying for it. Did you know that the supreme court recommended that they not try Davis for treason because they didn't have a case and would lose? Did you know that the south never signed a peace treaty? Lee's surrender only applied to the Army of Northern Virginia and no one else? That the war did not end at Appomattox? In fact legally it never ended. Why was Fort Sumter the first place that the south attacked? I know what they teach in school. Half truths, lies and propaganda. I know it takes work but you need to educate yourself as to what really happened during the war between the states.

A tie...George Washington, for setting the standards for other presidents to follow, and Ronald Wilson Reagan, for showing the rest of the world just how big our balls can be when we need them to be.

Abe Lincoln was the best.  Abe the most honest.

George W. Bush is the worst  Bush the most dishonest.

Lincoln (1809-1865) could well be the best President this nation has ever had. That is because Lincoln understood what his job was even though many about him did not understand that duty. Pure and simple Lincoln was totally engaged in "preserving and protecting the Constitution of the United States."

With the civil war raging, Lincoln was the steady, but very saddened, hand at the till. He did what was necessary to save the Union, and in a very real sense doing his duty cost him his life.

Lincoln had an intellect perhaps the equal of Thomas Jefferson, the practical experience of Woodrow Wilson  the tenacity of Harry Truman and the rectitude of George Washington.

Without Lincoln, arguably there would be no USA today.

We are not likely to see his equal, ever.
