  1. Colin Meads was voted player of the century a few years back he played for the all blacks from 1957 to 1971. Known as Pine tree he was a farmer from the king country in the north island of new zealand and if you can watch some archive footage of him you would see why he was brilliant. In my opinion a close second to him is former wallaby captain John Eales

  2. Gareth Edwards

  3. The best player ever is definatley Colin (Pine tree) Meads.

I also think that the most skilled player ever would have to be Dan Carter.

  4. jonah lomu

  5. Fantastic question - my personal hero was Zinzan Brooke (All Blacks No 8) who controlled an amazing scrum for a side that is chiefly famous for its backs.  He scored an amazing drop goal from outside 50 yards in the 95 World Cup but  consistently supported the rest of the team; I never saw him going for personal glory again - and he was rarely involved in any overly rough play, a rarity in a southern hemisphere team where the standards (and violence levels) are so much higher.  I also served him once in a pub in Wimbledon and he was a thoroughly nice bloke.  We salute you!

  6. Richard Sterling,....he Captained,and   played No.8 for Weymouth in 1994,

Jonah Lomu  came to Weymouth Club, he too was a No. 8,at the time .

BUT.......Richard was just sooooooooo  good, that they switched Jonah to the wing...

Now...how many players could displace Jonah ?

I ask you , how good was this Richard Sterling .

PS .....sadly.....Richard couldn`t  sing as good as Jonah.

  7. david campese

  8. ~ Definitely a difficult one as it's hard to select any one player given how the game has evolved and changed over the years.  How would Colin Meads fare in todays game?  And wouldn't it be a treat to be able to have say Zinzan Brooke vs  Rodney So'oialo ~ Grant Fox vs Daniel Carter ~ Frank Bunce vs Tana Umaga ~ Michael Jones vs Jerry Collins (etc) all at peak form and be able to make comparisons!

Add Jonah Lomu and you've got a whole other answer!

I'm picking according to what I've been able to gauge in the modern & professional era and going with "Richie McCaw".  He has mastered the breakdown & contact area and quite often the referee doesn't know whether to penalise him or applaud him ~ normally opting for the penalty because what he achieves is just unbelievable.

If you watch Richie go into a tackle he has this amazing ability to readjust his body position (regardless of how awkward he may be at the initial point of contact) and be able to safely present the ball for his team.  His ball retention skills are truly remarkable!

Add to that his exceedingly high tackle rate and high work rate around the park ~ he is the  ultimate ubiquitous scavenger who cleverly manages to work the rules to his advantage!  Not only physically adept but a real rugby savvy player with great leadership skills! ~
