  1. Regarding the 'edit' comment you made.

It SO turns me on when you think you are so right. :) x.

PS Could you not apply your skills used at the coal mine to another industry?

  2. The last French coal mine was closed a few years ago because it was not profitable any more to extract coal.

EDIT: There are still jobs related to coal to secure the coal sites so they do not become environmental hazards. There must be jobs related to coal imports too but there is no more extraction. There have been several attempts at reopening coal mines in Burgundy and elsewhere but they are systematically opposed by environmental groups.

Coal is not favored in France's energetic policy, it's a political choice so coal is not a major employer any more. Since a lot of jobs were lost, coal-related jobs were given in priority to former coal miners who were trained to do something else. I doubt they are creating jobs in the coal industry. Companies like SOFIREM work on helping people and regions transition to post-coal mining industries : http://www.industrie.gouv.fr/energie/cha...

The equivalent of UK Coal was Charbonnages de France: http://www.charbonnagesdefrance.fr/accue... (now their website only talks about the history of French coal mining)
