  1. The best guys in the flat are usually pretty big. A big guy develops a lot more power an for the flat, where everyone has about the same wind resistance your total power output is important.  The climbers are average height  or below. For climbing power to weight is important as you are lifting your own weight up the hill, so a small guy, who might be less powerfull than his competitors can do well.  That was one of the great things about Lance - he was a big guy but he could climb.


  2. The biggest bloke would be Magnus Backstedt. He is around 1.93 metres tall and 94 kg (6'4" and 207 lb)

      What exactly do you mean by "normal"?  None would be carrying much in the way of excess fat.  I supposed most could be described as a touch short though.
