  1. The monarchy was abolished a while ago.

  2. Right now, it's a mess:

On 7 July 2006 HRH Prince Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of Aosta, supported by several members of the Savoy family and by leading exponents of two quasi-official organisations associated with his dynasty, declared himself the legal successor of King Umberto II of Italy (who died in exile in 1983). In his declaration and several statements issued with it he states that he, and not his third cousin (Prince Vittorio Emanuele, Duke of Savoy), is the Head of the Royal House of Savoy, asserting that Vittorio Emanuele, only son of King Umberto II, was excluded from the succession based on certain principles of dynastic law.

Consistent with this reasoning, he further states that Prince Emanuele Filiberto, son of Vittorio Emanuele, is excluded from the line of succession, and that any official royal act undertaken by Vittorio Emanuele since succeeding His Majesty King Umberto II, including changes to the statutes of the dynastic orders of chivalry and bestowal of honours (investiture of knights and dames), in these is illegal ipso facto, and not to be "recognised.

  3. Italy is currently a republic, therefore, the country is run by Giorgio Napolitano as President. However, the pretender to the Italian throne is disputable since there are two descendants from the House of Savoy both claiming the right to the Italian crown as the rightful heir, Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples and Amedeo, 5th Duke of Aosta. A pretender is a claimant to an abolished throne or to a throne already occupied by somebody else.

The House of Savoy was formed in the early eleventh century in the historical Savoy region. Through gradual expansion, it grew from ruling a small county in that region to eventually rule the Kingdom of Italy until the end of the Second World War. At the time that it ended in 1946, the House of Savoy was the longest surviving royal house in the world. Both Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples and Amedeo, 5th Duke of Aosta are also claiming to be the head of the House of Savoy.

Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples (born February 12, 1937) was the last Crown Prince of Italy and is considered to be a pretender to the defunct Italian throne. He is commonly known in Italy as Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia.

Amedeo, Duke of Aosta, (born 27 September 1943) is one of those who claim to the headship of the House of Savoy, the family which ruled Italy from 1861 to 1946, as well as the heir to the short-lived Kingdom of Croatia during World War II with the name Zvonimir II. He has two daughters:

Princess Bianca Irene Olga Elena Isabella Fiorenza Maria of Savoy (b. Florence, 2 April 1966)

Princess Mafalda Giovanna Shams Maria Fiorenza Isabella of Savoy (b. Florence, 20 September 1969)

  4. I'm pretty sure that Italy is a republic, with no King, Queen or Princess.  Anyone claiming to be must be a wannabe, but has no real legal right to the claim.

Of course, there's always the Princess Marcella Borghese....but I'm not even sure she's alive.

  5. For those who say that there is no king of Italy because Italy is a republic should remember that the King of Spain still holds the title of King of Jerusalem. Clearly he doesn't rule Israel or Palastine.

I think one of the first two answers are the best. :)

  6. As the last King of Italy died over 20 years ago and Italy is now a Republic there is no answer.

  7. Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples ..... his full name is:

Vittorio Emanuele Alberto Carlo Teodoro Umberto Bonifacio Amedeo Damiano Bernardino Gennaro Maria di Savoia.

Born February 12, 1937  was the last Crown Prince of Italy and is considered to be a pretender to the defunct Italian throne. He is commonly known in Italy as Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia.

He has lived for most of his life in exile – following a referendum in 1946 in which a majority of the Italian people voted for Italy to become a republic.

no Princess, he married a Swiss  water skier,  Marina Doria.
