i take it you mean the nascar sprint cup champion, and the winner last year was jimmie johnson (2nd year running).  and if you are going by points, currently kyle busch is leading the standings in 2008.  

but if you mean the "world champion" in terms of the old name for this weekend's race ("the world 600"), the last person to win it was casey mears, memorial day weekend last year.

ps. lenny d, i've seen the #18 car look pretty "sweet" (pun intended) a few other times - usually rolling into victory lane ;-)

There is no NASCAR "world champion", there are only NASCAR champions and that was Jimmie Johnson last year. The only true "world champion" last year was Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari in F1.  That is the ONLY acknowledged "World Championship"
