actually.......carlos gomez is not the fastest, you can tell because he has a higher batting average than the leader in steals (taveras is hitting .244 compared to gomez's .248) but he still has twice as many steals.  I know the question is about straight up speed, and i can understand that diff't situations warrant steals and others dont, but double the steals??? and i think joey gathright could beat gomez in a flat out foot race.

Carlos Gomez would be my guess.  In a 40 yard dash I'd take Gomez over any other MLB player from what I've seen.

That doesn't mean he's the best base stealer or outfielder etc., in MLB (because those skills require timing and vision on top of great speed etc.,), but in terms of raw track speed Gomez is my pick.
