  1. Man has had the need for self-defense since the beginning. Not sure what answer you are asking for. Surely no one knows who the first martial artist was or even what the very first martial art was. Only thing that can be said for sure is that it was a long time ago.

Edit: Michael K .... Actually martial arts can be traced back to India before China and even further back to Biblical times, if not before.

  2. ug or og when they were fighting over ugly woman in cave man days.

  3. No one can tell you that, the answer is lost in antiquity.

  4. There are many places where it could have come from, martial arts can be dated to Greece, India, even Africa. Of course where martial arts started is more what you call martial arts; it could have been when someone realized sticks worked more effectivley than fist, or when some started teaching sword classes to students.

  5. We will never know the answer to this question. It was probably someone in China, where most of the martial arts originated. Many of the karate and kung fu "schools" are more than 500 years old. During the 1800's karate found it way to Japan. Ninjitsu probably came much earlier, perhaps as early as the 1500's. It also found it way to Korea by about 1200 AD in the forms of weapons training and Tae Know Do, Tang So Do and MANYYYY other forms. Little is known or recorded about the instructors or sensei's who became the masters. There is SOME historical information about the great soldiers, warriors, samurai's, etc...who lead the way. There is a lot of information if you Google any of these words: Samurai, martial arts, karate, kung-fu, tae kwon do, etc.... One of my favorite martial artists is a man named Gichin Funakoshi. A Japanese man who founded the Shoto-kan karate style in Okinawa during the 1800's.

  6. Correction Martial Arts actually started in Greece with boxing and pankration way before anything started in china. It went from Greece to India then on to asia.
