  1. the great man GA #5 - the best by a mile and measured by the fact he could play any position on the ground and be the best - most players are limited

  2. Strauchnie!

  3. **Would have to agree with you, Gary Ablett Snr is in my opinion the greatest AFL player, I'm glad that I was able to see him play in person.

He was so exciting to watch and it's such a shame that he ended his career the way he did.**

  4. Pains me to say it but Gary Ablett SNR.

  5. Teddy Whitten! They don't call him Mr. Football for nothing

  6. Tony Modra.

    watch that, and you'll understand

  7. Chris Judd.

Why is everyone nominating all those old codgers that never played AFL? That was VFL & most of those named wouldn't even get a game today.

  8. Kevin Murray of Fitzroy wins the award hands down.

He played with such a back complaint that he had to wear a corset that would have done Mae West proud.

He played X amount of games for Fitzroy; went to the west for a couple of years & coached East Perth; then returned to Fitzroy where he notched up 300 games & won a Brownlow Medal.

He was far more consistent than the flashy, moody players such as Gary Ablett - plus he wasn't one to put in the dirt like Whitten, Ablett, Barassi etc.

He was my idol then, & still is.

  9. Gary Ablett Snr without doubt. I watched every match that he played in (beginning with a practice match at K.P in 1984 when straight away he showed that he was a class above) and he was just an absolute SUPERSTAR. Every time the ball went near him you would just hold your breath in excitement wondering what he would do next. He was just so strong and brilliant and talented . Some of the marks he took were amazing and unfortunately many were not captured on T.V very well. I have watched football for 35 years and therefore can't comment on the older players but just know that Gary Ablett is the best player that I have ever seen. P.S His personal life is irrelevant.

  10. I think its either Ron Barrassi or Polly Farmer two of the many great players that changed the game for the better I bet none of the Abletts would place themselves in their league.

I also think Malcolm Blight was a much better player than Ablett snr in his day.

  11. Hhm, Gary Ablett you say?  You must have an interesting set of criteria for measuring greatness (drug abuse, various other "interesting" behaviours).

  12. Ted Whitten hands down!

Everyone knows Mr. Football is the greatest

  13. I have never seen a player with the same awareness as KB - Kevin Bartlett, Richmond.  The rules were different then and if you dropped the ball before you were tackled (or more just didn't pick it up), YOU got the free kick.  KB as well as being agile, fast and tough at the bottom of the packs was an absolute master of judging when he was about to be tackled.

Second up maybe Harvey the Saint, Buckley the Pie.

I always thought I'd be putting Tredrea in my list one day ... but nah like Carey he turned out to be just another big wanker.

  14. I'd have to say from my time it would be Hird or Buckley, but from what I have seen and heard, I'd also say Ted Whitten.

  15. Gary Ablett snr,   i like the answer where his life style is brought into the question,  you were asking 'footballer' , so for me it's Gazz snr, he was a star mate, i barrack for the tigers obviously but in the lte 80's and early 90's, if  i could manage a Geelong - Richmond game i woukd go, not to watch the tigers win, but to watch Ablett play, he was 2nd to none, i can only go by what i have witnessed not name players i never saw play.

Royce Hart was another who could do unbelievable things, fearless marks backing into packs, floating across packs, once the ball hit the ground, he was cat like.  Also Alex Jesaulenko was right up there, there have been many great players, tough question.

  16. Wayne Carey could win games off his own boot. Watching him during the mid 90s was unbelievable.

In recent times though the best performance I've seen with my own eyes was what gary ablett jnr did to the roos this year. That was mind blowing. They couldn't touch him all night.

  17. Sorry but its just gotta be luke ball ♥ his adorable and a fantastic player!!

  18. Anthony "The Man" Mundine.

He is yet to play AFL, but will do so after retiring from boxing and baby sitting Money Bill Williams.

After one game, he will be proclaimed as the best AFL player ever.  That will naturally come from Mundine himself.

If you don't believe me, go and ask him.  He will tell you.

  19. Tough one!  G. Ablett had more ability than any player I have ever seen, he could do things that no other player could do! Malcolm Blight was another who had the freakish element about him, probably just below Gazza, Leigh Matthews was the all round match winner, not as spectacular as Ablett and Blight but as a small forward/rover there has been none better, a hard call to make but I go with Gary Ablett.

  20. I'd like to say Ted Whitten, but because I never saw him play or saw much footage, I'd have to say Gary Ablett snr. I've got the 1989 Grand Final and have seen the Premlim and he was brilliant 9 goals in the GF and 8 goals and 10 marks in the PF. His whole 1989 Finals Series was one of the best.

  21. Benjamin Luke Cousins :)

    That guys a legend!!!

but don't go to collingwood mate, i'll have a heart attack!!

  22. An almost impossible question to answer. The game has changed so much that it is different to even 20 years ago. Many players today wouldn't have stood a chance back in the 40s and 50s, just as many of those champion players who played then wouldn't get a game now.

  23. If you go back a few years it would have the be Charles Brownlow, after all they named a Fairest and Best medal after him

  24. would have to be the late but Great EJ. Mr Football himself
