  4. there are two major criteria you have to consider when picking the best heavy weight. You have to look at :

1)Level of competition: In this case Ali had undeniably the best level of competition out there,he fought  and beat Frazier,Foreman,Liston,Patterson,Norton and many other greats all in their primes, several of his fights have become legendary and are viewed as boxing classics, he defied a lot of odds and was the first man to regain the title three times, moreover he beat a lot of opponents when he was actually past his prime, Dempsey's level of competition was not that great and the fact that he drew the color line does not help his case either, Joe Louis had a decent level of competition in his era and he went against the best avaliable,he defeated hall of famers like baer, schmelling and braddock and had the longest heavyweight reign in history however his level of competition is nowhere close to Ali's, tyson never had the best level of competition in his day, he was extremely dominant for three years and gave fans many great knock outs but his competiton was lackluster and his loss to Douglas who was truly just an average opponent raises a lot of questions, Lewis and Holyfield had decent competiton in their primes and had remarkable careers but again Ali had the better competition. Marciano is a sentimental favorite to many but his level of opposition was not great ezzard charles and moore were old blown up light heavyweights, Joe louis was a shell of his former self at the time of their fight and Walcott was on his way to retirement, the rest of his opposition was weak and could not be compared to Ali's.

Lenght of reign: Joe Louis had the longest reign as champion however his level of opposition was not as tough as Ali's who managed to regain the title three times. Ali defeated liston to become the heavyweight title and reigned undisputed for years until his title was stripped away from hin by the US government, he returned and won the title again from George Foreman who many thought was unbeatable and reigned for many years before losing and regaining the title at the age of 37....not other heavyweight has done so much against such good opposition.

when you take all this into consideration it is hard not to consider Ali the greatest.

  5. Without a shadow of doubt! it has to be Mike tyson, his poise, skill, power of punch & timing is second to none +his controlled agression was excellent but only when he was at top of his game an no mental issues! A true leg end but his career was tarnished with 1 thing or another.

  6. joe louis is not the greatest of all time the only reason why he was champ so long was because he fought only bums.it took him 13 rounds to beat billy conn a middle weight.if he was so massivelly strong why did it take so long to beat a guy almost 30 plus pounds lighter than him.why couldn't he fight bigger fighters.he even had a bum of the month list.does that not tell you the kind of people he fought.muhammed ali once said that joe louis was a bag of sand with a good right hand.the greatest heavyweight was muhammed ali.he was big 6'3" and he was around 215 lbs.he beat george foreman by ko,,joe frazier twice the last by tko, archie moore by ko,,jerry quarry by ko twice, ron lyle by ko,sonny liston by tko twice, ernie shavers by ko,henry cooper by ko,floyd patterson by ko twice,he was amazingly  fast and had the power to knock you out.he was and is the smartest fighter of all time.he will always be the best you will ever see in the heavyweight division.did louis ever face and beat by ko this many hall of fame fighters......(no he didn't).

  7. Ali. He had great boxing skill, speed, and stamina.

  8. Ali, PROBABLY, he's certainly the most famous. His fights with Frazier, Norton and Foreman were all time classics.

However, he did get some lucky descisions, twice Vs Ken Norton, also Vs Jimmy Young and Doug Jones, was badly floored by the ageing and 185lb Henry Cooper, and defended against some very poor opposition in Richard Dunn, Jean Pierre Coopmans, Chuck Wepner etc. And he also lost to Leon Spinks, who had only had 7 fights!

Id never go for Joe Louis. Mainly because he mostly defended against average and sometimes downright poor fighters. He never had that career defining fight. He was a great puncher, but was slow and had a suspect chin.

Marciano doesnt make it either. Although he retired undefeated, he only made 5 defences, and again, none of his opponents were truly great, Ezzard Charles was a blown up light heavy, Archie Moore was a 40 year old light heavy, Walcott was simply old, and La Starza and Cockell were average fighters.

With Dempsey its the same, average opposition, not that many defences, and he went off the boil, lost his hunger after the first few years.

Jack Johnson was ahead of his time, but it should be remembered that a lot of his fights were no descisions. However no one could touch him in his era.

Mike Tyson was only truly dominant from 1986 to 1989, a short period. The fighters he beat in that time were pretty average, Tubbs, Smith, Tucker and Williams(both boring points decisions), Bruno, and an old Holmes. Tyson came along too late to fight a peak Holmes, and too early to face peak Lewis, Holyfield or Bowe.

Lewis was better than Tyson, Bowe or Holyfield, he had a more successful career than all of them, and beat almost every major heavy of the last 25 years, bar Larry Holmes and Bowe, who was too scared to fight him.

Both at their peaks, Lewis would probably have beaten Ali, he was probably too big, bigger than Foreman, but with the advantage of better boxing skills, better jab, better movement and better stamina than Foreman.

However, no one quite captured the imagination like Ali did, and ive never seen such intense fights as Frazier1 and 3, all the Norton fights and vs Foreman, nor many more controversial fights than the Liston and Cooper bouts.

So, id go for Ali for those reasons.

  9. muhammad ali

  10. Muhammed Ali. A great person as well as fighter.

  11. Joe Louis.

Record defenses.  He hit so hard that he once knocked a man's teeth through his mouthpiece.  He had incredible power, was pinpoint accurate, great combos, exact economic movement and good balance.

Joe Louis beat some very good fighters in his title defense reign.  Just because all of his fights are in black and white doesn't mean they couldn't fight.

Look at the link below.  Boxing historians have Louis as #1 not Ali.

  12. Me
