  1. muhammad ali is number one,

joe louis and jack johnson would be next, then dempsey, marciano & tunney.

  2. muhummad ali !!!

  3. Muhammad Ali is the greatest. During his times, there's a lot of boxers that was stronger than him (e.g. Foreman, Frazier) but he was able to defeat those guys by using his smart and talent.

  4. We can only look at undisputed champs for this one. so eliminate everyone who just had a belt and wasn't the king of the class.

Greatest in comparison of overall record, competetion, and ability then we have to go Ali. he fought frazier, norton, spinks, and forman after a 3 year exile and wasn't in his prime and fought patterson, liston, williams. that is a good list of competetion that he had. granted he loss 5 fights he didn't lose until he was pretty much on a serious decline.

Greatest record of course is Rocky 49-0 but only had 7 championship fights against a alot of washed up boxers.

Greatest in a elimination fight against the under champs i go with holmes he was the perfect boxing specimen. granted he didnt have a lot of great fighters to go against i think he would have been trouble for any fighter in any era when he was in his prime

  5. Muhammad Ali!

His first loss to Frazier came after he was out of the ring 3 years. Tell me another fighter that had the success he did after a 3 year lay off. And he did come back to beat Frazier twice.

As for Norton Ali suffered a broken Jaw in the 4th round and still finished the fight. And again Ali came back to beat Norton twice. And was Ali in decline then? yes he was, by the early 70's Ali was already exhibiting the early signs of Parkinson's. By the mid 70's in order to train Ali had started to take a human growth hormone just so he could train. His foot work was gone and he now was mostly flat footed and would let guys punch away wearing them down and occasionally give a few flurries and muster up enough energy to dance a little bit. But it was clear by the 70's Ali was deteriorating and fast.

They call him the Greatest because he was the greatest. Not only a great boxer but a great man..and a great poet that makes him the greatest. unless your religious

In only his 15th pro fight he made a name for himself by dominating and destroying the Great Legend Archie Moore in 4 rounds. Sure Moore was 47 years old but he was comming of string of wins and a draw with Willie Pastrano before he fought Ali.

"When you come to the fight, don't block the aisle or the door ..you will all go home after round four." - Ali before the match.

Then he beat the baddest man on the planet at the time by making him quit on his stool, Even surviving a round of fighting half blind from something Liston rubbed in his eyes.

He defended it easily against  Patterson, Chuvalo, Mildenberger , Cooper,Williams, and Terrell.

Then he gave up 3 years of his career sticking to his belief that the Vietnam war was wrong in a time when Malcolm X  is assassinated he had the balls to take a stand. It cost him millions of dollars and 3 years of his prime, he also had a 5 year prison term hanging over his head.

When he came back, his legs where not as great as they were before. His agility was not as same after the layoff. He lost to Frazier but then he adjusted and fought a little different then beat Frazier twice.

He broke his jaw in the 4th round of the Norton fight and still finished the fight then came back and beat Norton twice.

He beat Foreman when everyone feared Ali might be killed in the ring. He couldnt punch with Foreman, He couldnt move as good as he used to be able to outbox Foreman, so he found a way to let Foreman bomb away and come of the ropes and counter him up the middle and eventually stopping Foreman in the 8th round

Then by the 70's he was already experiencing Parkinson's syndrome but still won fights and won the world heavyweight championship 4 times in the toughest era of the division.

Also outside the ring he used his influence to free P.O.W's.

And countless other things hes done in his life.

Thats why hes the greatest Danny Boy.

and I guess I would have to say Ali just slightly over Rocky and Joe Louis.

  15. Joe Louis

  16. Ali

  17. Larry O. said it best. Cassius Clay. Even beter than Ali.

  18. Cassius Clay

  19. You will probably get allot of different answers on this.  It's hard to compare the greatest due to time fluctuations between the great heavyweights.  You can break it down into categories for example, one could state Marciano because he was a light heavy/cruiser weight wise who fought heavyweight and retired undefeated.  You could say Joe Louis because of how long he held the Undisputed Championship.  Ali/Clay because of his many great victories and coming back after a long layoff to win again.  What if Jack Johnson fought during the 60s and 70s?  My favorite will always be Frazier and remember he tomato canned Ali also in his win over him.  So what you are gonna get are answers on most fair-weather fans favorite heavyweight.  Don't count out Larry Holmes, he held the title for 7 years and successfully defended it 20 times, second only to who I would say was Louis due to how long he kept the title (12 Years) and his 25 successful defenses which still stand today.

Countee- How can you say Ali's losses were during his decline????????? Maybe to Berbick, Holmes and Spinks at the end of his career from 1978-81 but how on earth can you say his losses to Frazier in 71 also known as the Fight of the Century, and his Loss to Norton in 73????? Was he in decline then????
