  1. Secretariat - show me other horses who win races by 15+ lenghts.

    John Henry

    Forgoe

    Seattle Slew

  2. Tulloch

Tulloch's three-year-old career remains unmatched in Australian racing history. His 14 victories in that season included the 1957 Caulfield Cup in Australian record time as well as the VRC, AJC and Queensland Derbies.

Tulloch's sensational career was interrupted by a serious stomach illness that sidelined him for nearly two years. He then made an amazing comeback which culminated in an emotion-charged victory with 62.5 kgs in the 1961Brisbane Cup.

In 53 starts, Tulloch's only unplaced run was a luckless 7th in the 1961 Melbourne

  3. Seabiscut

even though he didn't win the triple crown he was the top Eastern horse in the U.S.A in his time and beat the top Western horse (Man O' War) in the legendary match race. he did all this while being the smallest horse in the league at the time.

  4. It is so difficult to compare horses from different eras, or horses that raced in different countries;  and even comparing horses that were noted for their performances at a specific distance or on a specific surface is difficult.  Example:  Bold Ruler and Round Table were both top-class race horses, but excelled on different surfaces:  Round Table on turf and Bold Ruler on dirt.

I think that it's wise to divide racing into different eras and to further divide horses by specialty and even gender, and to also consider horses by country in which they raced.

Some of the horses that I believe are among the all-time greats of the modern age (defined as 1950 onward):

In England, Ireland and Europe, I think you have to consider *Ribot, the undefeated winner of the ARc de Triomphe, as one of the all-time greats.  Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, and *Vaguely Noble also have to be rated highly.

I personally think that Dahlia and Allez France have to be considered two of the top female racers, with other females like Detroit, All Along, and Urban Sea getting nods.

Here in the US, I think the modern all-time great runners on dirt at distances of 1-1/8 miles to 1-1/4 miles include Secretariat, Spectacular Bid, Seattle Slew, Ack Ack, Dr. Fager, Damascus, with nods also to John Henry, Forego, Cigar, Affirmed, and Alydar.

For US turf runners, I think you have to go with Round Table and Kelso as pretty darn near invincible on the turf.

For females at distances of 1-1/8 miles to 1-1/4 miles, I'd go with Ruffian, Mom's Command, Lady's Secret, Personal Ensign, and Winning Colors.  If you want to consider females running at sprint distances, then I think Dr. Fager's half-sister Ta Wee stands alone.  If you consider females running at distances longer than 1-1/4 miles, then I think Shuvee stands alone, at least in this country.  Makybe Diva "down under" is right up there with Shuvee.

If we get into the steeplechasers, then I think for the US, Lonesome Glory rates highest, and for Britain Red Rum.

I really hate to limit myself to just one horse as all-time best.  I'm grateful for all the gallant runners that have given me wonderful memories of stirring races.

  6. Cigar was a race horse !! Cigar matched the accomplishment of the great Triple Crown champion Citation, a record that had stood for almost 50 years. Cigar was voted 1995 Champion Older Male and the most prestigious honor of all, the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year.

    Career Highlights:

    1995 Champion Handicap Male

    1995 Horse of the Year

    1996 Champion Handicap Male

    1996 Horse of the Year

1996 Hwt Older Horse in UAE 9.5-11F

Carried 130 pounds to victory in the '96 Massachusetts Handicap.

Won 16 straight races from the Oct. 28, 1994 NYRA Mile through the July 13, 1996 Arlington Citation Challenge. Lost the 17th race, the Aug. 19, 1996 Pacific Classic (Gr. I) after engaging in a speed duel with Siphon, setting up a win by Dare and Go.

Cigar shares his 16 win streak with only one other North American runner in this century, Citation.

Undefeated in 1995, winning 10 of 10 starts, 8 of them Gr. I.

Won the inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup in 1996. Despite lacking a Gr. I status, it attracted the most accomplished (money earned) field in racing history to that point.

Won a total of 11 Gr. Is and the Dubai World Cup.

Retired as the leading North American money earner of all time with $9,999,813, a record which stands to this day.
