It depends on your criteria, but Queen Elizabeth II must be the greatest in one respect, having known every Prime Minister since Churchill, personally known every major world figure since the War, and been at the heart of British life for over 50 years. However, this is obviously more by dint of her position than her personal talents.

I suppose Sir Tim Berners Lee must be near the top of the list having invented the World Wide Web along with his CERN colleagues.
