I say Ian Healy when you look at his keeping only and not his batting

  1. As a pure keeper I'd have Bob Taylor every time.

  2. In ODI, it has got to be Dave Richardson, Adam Gilchrist, Mark Boucher and Ian Healy. In test match situation, my order is: Franz Alexander, Gilbert Langley, Salim Yousuf, Adam Gilchrist, Courtney Browne, Arthur Grout, Mark Boucher, Kamran Akmal, Geraint Jones, Dave Richardson, Rashid Latif, Jeff Dujon, Rodney Marsh, Jack Russell, Ridley Jacobs, Deryck Murray, Donald Tallon and Ian Healy.

Both together, it has got to be Adam Gilchrist.

PS: Geraint Jones took 3.91 catches per test match, against Rodney Marsh's 3.70 and Ian Healy's 3.32 per match. Inspite of the numbers, there is a lot of prejudice against Geraint Jones even in his own country, even though no keeper of England has reached near his number of 3.91. Please do your own research and you will find that amongst keepers who played atleast 20 test matches, Geraint Jones' dismissals of 3.91 per match comes third (Adam Gilchrist's 4.33 and Courtney Browne's 4.05). Be fair to Geraint Jones. Afterall, there is a soul in that man, wanting to be recognised.

  3. I haven't seen any of the following in action, but I am told Alan Knott, Bob Taylor, Bert Oldfield, Wally Grout, Rodney Marsh, Syed Kirmani, Wasim Bari were all great keepers of yesteryear. Whether or not Healy is their equal or better is a matter that will be hard to resolve.

From those I have seen play, I would have to say Jack Russell was the best keeper of the last 15 years. Lightning-fast behind the stumps, he could remove the bails and effect a stumping almost before the batsmen realized the ball has gone past his bat. A dependable catcher as well. But it was his enthusiasm and the sense of eccentric genius that he exuded that would make him respected as he was. Playing in one of his last FC games a few days before his 42nd birthday, the spring in his step prompted one commentator to remark that he looked like a 20 year old excited to be playing his first first-class game. One helluva character to go with unbelievable natural ability.
