I think that's from The Stand. In the book Tom Cullen keeps saying "m-o-o-n that spells" whatever word he is trying to say.

They also hypnotize him & use seeing the full moon as a subliminal message so he will know when it is time to leave the enemies camp & head back to the good guys.
