At present it's probably Kumar Sangakkara. He's much respected in every cricket playing country for his cricket, but also his personality and cricketing 'wisdom'. There's a cool song written about him called "Waltz Sangakkara" on YouTube.

The only other person I can think of that is universally admired is Sachin Tendulkar for his talent and behaviour.

Reality check needed for indians from india; Dhoni is only popular in india. Here in england people laugh and taunt at his funny technique.

I cant believe someone like dhoni is more popular than the Great Dravid, who has served so much to his country, even to the extent of keeping wicket, being indias biggest test match winner, being so humble and down to earth (something that i cant say about dhoni) being mr reliable and more often than not bailing india out of trouble.

its different for different countries for eg Sachin and Dhoni are most popular in India but they are not much popular in SA, Australia etc. I'll say Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne are the most popular cricketers they are hughly popular in Australia, England and New Zealand they have plenty of fans in Sri Lanka and South Africa also in India after IPL
