  1. How about a legal system that thinks insurance companies are a deep pocket for people's claims?  How about lawyers who take one-third of your legal judgment?

  2. Well, Malpractice insurance only accounts for a small portion of the quickly rising medical costs.  If you want to cut down on malpractice suits, make those puntative damages exempt from the lawyer's contingency.

The BIGGEST factor in rising medical costs, is the American belief that people don't have to be responsible for their own actions -  our expanding waistlines are creating a tremendous amount of health issues, and we expect a doctor to treat the problem with medication or surgery, and we expect someone else to pay for it.

Additionally, we are living longer, and NOT going down without a fight - as we get older and older, we're treating illnesses (at great expense) instead of just dying off. AND, as babies are born earlier and earlier, instead of dying, we're spending a tremendous amount of money trying to save them.

But it's kinda hard to say, "ok, grandma, you're just old, time to stop treating you", or "ok, your daughter is 24 weeks gestation, we're not doing the NICU thing for her".  But those two categories of medical spending are ASTRONOMICAL.
