In the VFL/AFL comp it's Carlton and Essendon with 16 premierships apiece.

If we're talking about AFL premierships, then clearly the two most successful teams are the Brisbane Bears/Lions, and the West Coast Eagles.

Note that I am NOT including VFL premierships in this...because they are VFL, not AFL.

EDIT: sscno9 - not at all. I'm simply basing this on the fact that since the AFL was formed, Brisbane and West Coast have been the most successful teams with three premierships each.

So your answer seems to be that in the major leagues, Port Adelaide Magpies is the most successful. Although I have a feeling that you already knew this answer and this is a loaded question :).
