  1. George IV and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, George IVs brother was king, but when he abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, his younger brother George became king, or Bertie as he was commonly called!

  2. George Vl and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

  3. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon)

The Queen is a "Queen Regnant", that is she is a "ruling queen" in her own right by birth (oldest child of the deceased King) whereas her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was a "dowager queen", that is she was the wife, and then the widow, of a King.

The wife of a King is always a queen, even after she is widowed. But the husband of a Queen Regnant (like the Queen's husband, Philip) is never a king.

  4. Her father was HRH George VI and her mother was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

  5. When they were courting, it probably never crossed their minds that they would become the parents of a future Queen. The young man was Prince Albert, Duke of York, known as "Bertie", second son of King George V. Bertie was greatly outshone by his elder brother, the handsome, charming, and popular Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, who would one day inherit the throne. Where Bertie was never in good health, the Prince of Wales seemed always on the go. Where Bertie had a terrible stammer, and sometimes could hardly get out a word, his older brother had the gift of a smooth tongue. Bertie wasn't confident around women, but the Prince of Wales was quite the ladies' man.

It was thought a blessing when Bertie persuaded the youngest daughter of the earl of Strathmore to marry him. The King and Queen felt that Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, a pretty and popular debutante, would be just the thing for their second son, who seemed to be a late bloomer. They would settle down, participate in a minor way in royal events, and fade gently into the background.

But that's not what happened. The Prince of Wales fell in love with a woman . . . an American woman, and she was already divorced, not once, not twice, but three times. It was suggested that the Prince enjoy the lady's company in an "unofficial capacity." He wouldn't hear of it. He wanted to marry her, and marry her he insisted he would. The old King died, and the Prince of Wales became the new king. Now, he thought, the people of the British Commonwealth - his people! - would accept the lady as their queen. But the people said no. She is not acceptable as queen.

So the King quit his job, packed it in, and married his American divorce. This left a vacancy on the throne. By ancient law, when one king dies, or abdicates, his son fills the throne. But the King had no son. So, according to the law, if the former king is no longer the king, and has no son, the crown goes to his next younger brother.

That was "Bertie" and his young wife - the Duke and Duchess of York. It was they who would now become King and Queen, and their two young daughters, Elizabeth, the elder, and Margaret, the younger, would now live in the limelight in Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth becoming the royal heiress - the future Queen.
