  1. Exceller beat Seattle Slew and Affirmed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 1978 when it was still run at a mile and a half.  Slew and Affirmed were so concerned about each other that they set crazy fast fractions.  You can see them both coming around the final turn trying to give their horses a little bit of a break.  Cordero turned back to look as he entered the stretch to see how much longer he had before he needed to push slew a bit more... had he asked him a little sooner I think he could have won.  It's really a fun race to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZFr6N2lN...

  2. Exceller!

  3. exceller

and he ended up in a slaughter house,

the single saddest thing that has ever

    to a true race horse.

  4. Ferdinand also ended up in a slaughter house and won the derby what a shame

  5. Exceller beat Seattle Slew and Affirmed in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Exceller also won in 1978 7 stakes races including the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Hollywood Gold Cup and Sunset Handicap.

In 1997 Exceller was nominiated to Racing's Hall of Fame.

In 1997 he died in a slaughterhouse.

There is a fund named after him called the EXCELLER FUND. The Exceller Fund was created in memory of Exceller to provide funding for the purchase, care, retirement and adoption of Thoroughbreds that might otherwise meet the same fate in the slaughterhouse.
