Pervez Musharraf is the president of Pakistan. He took over in a military coup in 1999 after serving as the Army Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He never served as Prime Minister. Prior to 1999, the power of the presidency was sometimes very high and real and sometimes it was more of a figurehead position, however today, Musharraf has created it so that the President holds great power in Pakistan. He was re-elected after a very controversial election and many people still question whether or not his re-election was legal based on the Pakistani Constitution.
