The smartest guy in the world is actually a woman, Marilyn vos Savant, and yes, that's her real name.  She was listed in Guinness Book of World Records under Highest IQ and does a column for Parade magazine.

My friend Tom or at least he is the smartest person I know. He used to read more books in a year then most  people do in a lifetime.

The smartest guy in the world at this time?  In the past, I would have answered people like DaVinci, Einstein, Copernicus.  Today, when it comes to smarts, you might want to think of what "area."  For example, when it comes to investments, Warren Buffet is clearly the winner.  When it comes to real estate, how about Donald Trump?  When it comes to mathematics/science/physics, my vote goes to Stephen Hawking.
